How do CS2 Terminals Work? Odds & How to Explained

Terminals were introduced with the Genesis Skins update on the 16th of September, 2025. Since then, another terminal was released, the Sealed Dead Hand Terminal on 11th of March, 2026. They are a new type of container, very different from cases. But what makes them different? How do they function, and how to get them? What about the odds of items in the terminals? Can I profit from terminals? Let’s check it out.

What if you could see the skin before deciding whether to spend your money? That's exactly what CS2 Terminals offer. Terminals allow you to look through each offer and pick what you want. Weapon cases just leave you with a chance. The only way to obtain Terminals is through weekly drops or by purchasing them from other players on the Steam Community Market or on third-party sites.

Unlike cases where you have to pay the price of a key to unbox, terminals are completely free to open. When opening a terminal, you will be greeted with an offer from the Arms Dealer. Once presented with an offer, you have 2 options: either accept the offer and provide payment via Steam Balance or decline it and get another offer. The Arms Dealer normally provides up to five offers, with a sixth offer appearing very rarely (around a 10% chance). Once opened, each offer lasts 72 hours. If all offers are used up, the terminal will break and vanish from the inventory. Be prepared, as the offers can get quite expensive, where the most expensive skin can reach a price of just under $2000.

Unsealing a Terminal

Once you unseal a terminal, you will be presented with a menu like above.

On the left will be the chat with the Arms Dealer. There you can see the offers provided along with some flavour text.

In the bottom left corner, you can find which offer you are on, the buttons to accept or decline the offer, and an offer limit which you can set up if you don’t intend on spending much money.

On the right, you can find the skin that is being offered, its float value, wear, and pattern. You can zoom in and drag to pan it, just like in the inspect menu.

On the bottom right is the expiration timer, the status of the skin, which will come with an Original Owner Certificate, a badge that remains valid only while you own the skin, and the collection catalog XP, which will grant a full level’s worth of XP if you get offered every skin in the same rarity in the collection. Purchasing the skins is not needed for the XP catalog.

Odds of Terminals

Each Terminal has a 20% chance of appearing in a weekly drop. Since there are currently two Terminals available in the weekly care package, the overall chance of receiving any Terminal is 40%.

The Genesis Collection Terminal and the Dead Hand Collection Terminal differ in odds for opening skins. Unlike the Dead Hand Collection, the Genesis Collection does not feature a Rare Special Item.

Odds of Genesis Collection Terminal:

  • Mil-Spec (Blue) 80.13%

  • Restricted (Purple) 16.02%

  • Classified (Pink) 3.21%

  • Covert (Red) 0.64%

Odds of Dead Hand Collection Terminal (Same odds as a traditional case):

  • Mil-Spec (Blue) 79.92%

  • Restricted (Purple) 15.98%

  • Classified (Pink) 3.20%

  • Covert (Red) 0.64%

  • Rare Special Item (Gold) 0.26%

The chance of obtaining a Rare Special Item (Gold) is 0.26%, which translates to a 1 in 385 chance. To receive a specific Rare Special Item in the Dead Hand Terminal, the odds are 1 in 8,602.

Odds of getting StatTrak™ items from Terminals (Same odds as a traditional case):

  • Mil-Spec (Blue): 7.9%

  • Restricted (Purple): 1.5%

  • Classified (Pink): 0.32%

  • Covert (Red): 0.064%

  • Rare Special Item (Gold): 0.026%

Profitability of CS2 Terminals and their offers

The prices of offers in the Terminals are influenced by how many players choose to buy or not buy a skin. This means if a lot of players buy a certain skin, it will go up in price. Valve determines the prices based on the principles of supply and demand. As Valve states in the Terminal offers: ”Prices are global and adjusted automatically based on demand for each item in the collection”. This is quite a vague statement by Valve. They don’t offer exact numbers and metrics on how the system works, but thanks to CSROI, we can have a clearer understanding of whether the offer provided by a Terminal is worth taking.

The current estimated ROI (Return on Investment) of the Terminals:

  • Sealed Genesis Terminal – 89.12% ROI

  • Sealed Dead Hand Terminal – 109.5% ROI

When it comes to the exact profitability of a specific offer you’re interested in, CSROI comes in clutch again! Thanks to their new feature, the Terminal Buddy, it is now very easy and convenient to check if an offer is worth it or not. All you have to do is:

  1. Log in to CSROI with your Steam Account

  2. Paste a screenshot or start a video capture of your CS2 terminal

  3. From the screenshot, they will pull the float, wear, and offer price

  4. Compare the offer price to current Steam/BUFF163/CSFloat prices and make an informed decision on your terminals

Additionally, you must set your currency and language.

Offer data will be aggregated into an Unboxing ROI in the near future, and the more data provided, the more accurate it will be, so be sure to use the CSROI Terminal Buddy!

Conclusion

Be sure to get your weekly drops for a chance to sell or open a Terminal.

If you want to avoid throwing away a lot of money without any clear outcome, Terminals are a good option for you. They are very low risk, as the upfront payment is significantly less compared to traditional cases.

If you’re on a tight budget, set an offer limit before opening so you can get offers within your budget.

Don’t rush purchasing expensive offers. You have 72 hours to decide.

Don’t forget to check on CSROI if an offer you’re interested in is worth purchasing so you can make an informed decision about whether to accept the offer. And prepare a lot of money to spend on expensive coverts and gloves.
